Who is being selfish? My parents or me?
It's my birthday in a few days, and I'm trying to get my parents to save money and not spend a lot on me. I realized a couple of days ago that my parents, my brother and I have never seen a movie together in a theater as a family. Generally my parents will give me a check for "X" amount of dollars, and my brother will get me a gift card. I'm not expecting anything from them, but they insist on doing it. I figured this year we can just go to the movies together, but they absolutely refuse to go. I really wanted this birthday to be more meaningful instead of monetary. I asked my mother why they couldn't take four hours of their time to do what I enjoy, and I was called selfish for it. I'm really at a loss for words with them, I don't want their money I just want them to spend half a day doing something I enjoy. Is this really selfish? Or are my parents being the selfish ones? I just feel that it's easier for my parents to cut a check then actually invest time in their sons life. If that's the way they are going to be then I'm not sure how healthy our relationship will be in the future.
