Thankful for the troops?

I know people are, but I don't get it. They say we have an all-volunteer army, but its really a mercenary army. Maybe this is naive of me, but I think "Thou Shalt Not Kill" is pretty straightforward, there is no occasion, NONE, where it is acceptable to take another life. What ever happened to turning the other cheek?
